Statement: Los Angeles LGBT Center Responds to Mixed Supreme Court Rulings on LGBTQ+ Health, Immigrant Rights, Inclusive Education, and the Rule of Law
LOS ANGELES, CA, June 27, 2025 — In response to today’s series of consequential rulings from the United States Supreme Court—decisions that will reverberate across LGBTQ+ communities, immigrant families, and classrooms nationwide—Los Angeles LGBT Center CEO Joe Hollendoner issued the following statements:
Mahmoud v. Taylor: A Dangerous Blow to LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Education
“The Center strongly denounces the Supreme Court’s ruling in Mahmoud v. Taylor, which permits parents to opt students out of reading LGBTQ+-themed storybooks. This decision gives legal cover to bigotry disguised as personal belief, and undermines the foundational principle that public education should reflect and include the diversity of all students and families.
“LGBTQ+ representation is not controversial—it is essential. When our stories are treated as optional, it sends a chilling message to queer and trans youth that their lives, identities, and families are unworthy of acknowledgment. We will not be silent as our existence is erased from classrooms or debated in courtrooms.”
Trump v. CASA: A Grave Threat to Birthright Citizenship and the Constitution
“The Center unequivocally condemns the Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. CASA, which severely weakens the ability of federal courts to issue nationwide injunctions—even in cases involving blatantly unconstitutional actions.
“While this ruling did not directly uphold the Trump-era attempt to dismantle birthright citizenship, it opens the door to unchecked executive power and may lead to the temporary suspension of birthright citizenship in states that have not challenged the Trump administration’s executive order. The ruling further strips critical protections from those being harmed by unconstitutional actions, including immigrant and LGBTQ+ communities. As Justice Sotomayor wrote in her powerful dissent, ‘No right is safe in the new legal regime the Court creates.’
“We are deeply alarmed by this erosion of constitutional safeguards and what it signals for the future of civil rights litigation in this country.”
Kennedy v. Braidwood Management: A Crucial Victory for LGBTQ+ Health
“In the midst of a difficult day for civil liberties, we are relieved by the Court’s decision in Kennedy v. Braidwood Management, which upholds the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that insurers cover preventive services—including PrEP—at no cost to patients.
“This is a vital victory for LGBTQ+ health and for the ongoing fight against HIV. Access to preventive care saves lives—and it should never be up for debate. In a moment when our bodies, our health, and our very existence are under attack, this ruling offers necessary, if temporary, reassurance. The fight continues until all people—regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, or immigration status—can access the care they deserve without stigma, fear, or discrimination.”
In Closing
“Now is not the time to retreat. These rulings are a stark reminder that progress is not guaranteed—it must be fought for and protected. We urge our community and allies to speak out, show up, and remain steadfast in defense of our rights, our stories, and our future.
“The Los Angeles LGBT Center remains unwavering in our commitment to justice, inclusion, and equity—for every individual who helps shape the rich, diverse tapestry of our vibrant communities.”
