The Trevor Project reports that 85% of transgender youth say that recent debates around anti-trans bills have negatively impacted their mental health, and 52% of trans youth have serious considered suicide in the past year — with 20% making a suicide attempt in the past year. According to a poll by the Public Religion Research Institute poll published this year, 80% of Pennsylvanians support LGBT nondiscrimination protections.

State legislators have introduced S.B. 1046, a bill that would expressly designate sport activities in all public schools to be male, female or coed. This bill is not about protecting young people - it it weaponizing an attack against trans children and youth for political points. Transgender kids want to play sports for the same reasons all athletes do: to make friends, to build confidence and leadership skills, to be physically active, and to be a part of a team. Trans youth are as equally deserving of these opportunities as their cisgender peers. They do not deserve to be routinely and pointlessly scapegoated by adult politicians during election season.
