In alignment with Transgender Awareness Week (November 13–19), the Los Angeles LGBT Center will host a virtual workshop on Thursday, November 19, from 6–7:30 p.m. PT, for members of the trans and non-binary community to learn about their rights and the vital resources available to them in the event of a hate crime. Presented by the Center’s Transgender Economic Empowerment Project (TEEP), Anti-Violence Project, and Legal Services, the webinar entitled Know Your Rights: Victim’s Rights and Services will include a panel of the Center’s advocates followed by a Q&A forum.

“Alarmingly, nearly three dozen transgender and non-binary people nationwide have been murdered this year—making 2020 the year with the highest number of recorded trans homicides. Trans women of color are disproportionately targeted by an epidemic of hate-motivated rhetoric and misinformation we witness online,” said TEEP Program Manager Eden Anaï Luna. “We must put an end to these senseless crimes and, simultaneously, arm members of our community with education and resources to protect themselves. Now, more than ever, it is critical to know about our rights and the vital services available to us before we become another crime statistic.”

According to the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations’ 2019 Hate Crime Report, reported hate crimes against transgender people skyrocketed by 64 percent from 2018 to 2019.
