LOS ANGELES—For the first time in the history of the annual Threads of Change donation party, the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Young Professionals Council (YPC) will collect canned food items to help feed LGBT seniors as well as gently-used clothing to benefit homeless LGBT youth served by the Center. The ninth annual donation drive party will be held on Sunday, December 6, from Noon until 4 p.m., at Flaming Saddles in West Hollywood.
Admission to the clothing drive party is free. Guests who donate a bag of gently used clothes and/or a bag of canned, non-perishable food items will receive a complimentary drink.
The donated clothes will help stock the closet at the Center’s Youth Center on Highland in Hollywood where staff distribute an average of 1,200 clothing items each month to homeless LGBT youth. The canned foods will be distributed among the 450 to 600 active senior program participants of the Center’s Senior Services programs.
“It’s time to clear out your closets and cupboards for a worthy cause! On any given night, there are 6,500 homeless youth under the age of 24 on the streets of Los Angeles, and 40% of them are LGBT,” said YPC Chair Tommy Johnson. “Just as staggering, over a quarter of the active program participants of the Center’s Senior Services live on less than $1,000 a month. Help the Center continue to transform and save the lives of its youth and senior clients, especially during the holiday season—a time for joy and celebration.”
Items of apparel in greatest demand for men and women are:
- Gently used belts and neckties
- New socks, underwear and bras
- Gently used shoes and backpacks
Guests are encouraged to post photos of their donations on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to @LALGBTCenter with hashtag #YPCThreads.
