In response to President Biden’s Inauguration Day Executive Orders, the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Director of Policy and Community Building Terra Russell-Slavin issued the following statement:

“The Executive Orders signed Wednesday by President Biden are more than just reversals of the dangerous and bigoted Trump Administration policies. They mark a fundamentally progressive and inclusive start to the Biden Administration’s work to address the challenges of today’s America.

“These directives take decisive action in the areas of COVID-19, address climate change, launch protections for Dreamers, and initiate a whole-of-government initiative to advance racial equity and support underserved communities, specifically including the LGBTQ community. Biden’s first day of actions were historically inclusive of Black people, people of color, indigenous people, immigrants, and women.

“For the LGBTQ community, Wednesday’s Executive Order Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation makes clear that all federal anti-discrimination statutes that cover sex discrimination by definition prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. In the words of the Executive Order, ‘every person should be treated with respect and dignity and should be able to live without fear, no matter who they are or whom they love.’

“We join all of our social justice partners in welcoming Wednesday’s Executive Orders with optimism. This week democracy prevailed, and now we must work together to make the promise of equality and justice for all a reality.”
