The Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Transgender Economic Empowerment Project (TEEP) aims to reduce the high unemployment rate within the city’s transgender community by hosting its annual free job fair specifically tailored for transgender people. Sponsored by the City of West Hollywood and Grindr, the job fair will take place from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, at the West Hollywood Park Auditorium, 647 N. San Vicente Blvd. Job seekers will be provided with resume reviews and tips, an interview clinic, and a photo booth for professional headshots of jobseekers who will be able to keep their photos with them on a USB flash drive.

More than two dozen companies and businesses have already registered to participate in this year’s event.

“Our job fair is leading the way in the right direction to offset the poverty-level income of transgender people, who experience unemployment rates at twice the national average,” said TEEP Program Manager Drian Juarez. “With many of these potential candidates holding college degrees, I urge companies to take TEEP’s ‘Trans Champion’ challenge and commit to hiring trans people! Employers should hire workers based solely on their abilities—not on their gender identities.”

The job fair will include a panel of employment experts, including transgender entrepreneur Michaela Mendelsohn, CEO of Pollo West Corporation. Mendelsohn owns one of the largest El Pollo Loco franchises in western United States and recently founded the California Transgender Workplace Program to promote California as a national model of hiring trans workers and creating trans-positive employment environments. She also collaborates with the Center to conduct job trainings for potential employers.
