Art Division 10th Anniversary

The first decade of Art Division

The Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Advocate & Gochis Galleries are proud to collaborate with Art Division, a non-profit organization dedicated to training and supporting under-served youth who are committed to studying the visual arts. Marking its first decade of service, Art Division has curated an exhibit showcasing artworks by students past and present.

Art Division 10th Anniversary Exhibit The work in this exhibit consists of recent drawings, paintings photographs, prints and sculpture by twenty-eight artists who have been involved in Art Division since its founding ten years ago. There is an undeniable sense of the artists’ wide-ranging imagination and ability to express their personal and distinctive visions—from a corner taco truck to a daughter‘s tribute to her father. Our goal is to nurture the artistic voices that are present in each of our students. We encourage them to follow their creative impulses while paying attention to craft and detail. Thanks go to Art Division’s devoted, hardworking staff and faculty, and to all of the young artists who have entered our doors. We look forward to the next ten years.

About Art Division

Art Division is a non-profit organization dedicated to training and supporting under-served youth who are committed to studying the visual arts. Art Division distinguishes itself by providing in-depth services to young adults aged 18-26 in the Rampart District of Los Angeles, an at-risk population within one of Los Angeles’ most densely populated and underserved communities. Art Division was founded in 2010 by Dan McCleary to serve young adults in the Rampart District. As the Director of Art Programs for Heart of Los Angeles, an after-school program for youth up to 18 years old, McCleary realized that when his most talented and committed students aged out of the program, they lost access to community-based arts programs. Art Division was founded to give these young artists the professional training and academic support they need to succeed and transition into four-year colleges and successful careers.

Art Division has a permanent base in its Art Library near MacArthur Park. Its extended campus consists of painting and print-making studios, all located within walking distance of the library. For more information, please visit https://www.artdivision.org/

Artist Statement: This self-portrait was shot after my performance of “My Memorial,” a poem that operates as an instruction manual for when I am murdered: “Burn my body, and infuse the ashes into weapons. I am going to rest in pieces at the bottom of a Chanel purse, in the pockets of a pair or thrifted booty shorts, and in the gutter where #girlslikeus wind up drowning in the obscure cis-tym.” My partner, Malo, holds me close, assured that despite the systematic modalities that immobilize transgender health, we will get through dystopia together.
